The Rub Up CD Giveaway

I'm always looking for a good excuse to spend a bunch of time going through new reggae, especially when I'm on the road. Sheeit, any old excuse will do. Ayres & I decided we wanted to do a giveaway with our "Rub Up" mixCD (art & tracklist at www.djeleven.com/rub_up.html) so a new mix of reggae is the perfect promo for it. Boom! Excuse delivered. For the lucky first 50 people to email us at itstherub@gmail.com with their mailing address, you will have a shiny new copy of "Rub Up" in your mailbox in a couple weeks. - DJ Eleven

The Do-Over is a Sunday afternoon party in LA that always has incredible DJs and never announces the line-up; they post the DJ sets on their blog so everyone who didn't get in can hear what they missed. Like The Rub, they always have a line around the block, and like The Rub, the DJs can play whatever they want - that means good music! Ayres, Eleven & Cosmo have all played the Do-Over separately. Here are the DJ sets, along with pictures from the most recent Do-Over.

RIP RE-UP

"I was bitten by the nostalgia bug a few weeks year ago listening to an old Jackson 5 record and got kind of carried away, so I did a mix of Michael Jackson joints for Rub Radio (http://brooklynradio.net/the-rub/). I started in 1970 with the Jackson 5 and went all the way up through 2001, not always mixing because I wanted to go in chronological order. I skipped over some of the more obvious songs (ABC, I Want You Back, Billie Jean, PYT) - if anybody is dying to hear those, please come see me DJ in real life. I hope this mix brings up as many happy memories and good feelings for you when you listen to it as it did for me making it."

New show up!

Rub Radio broadcasts from SXSW 2009, with super special rap guest and one of our favorite people in the world Bun-B (be sure to get that new UGK album!), plus a quick bull session with Diplo, who talks about his Major Lazer project with Switch.  Cosmo, Eleven & Ayres seal the deal with some hip-hop, some house, some soul and a whole lot of off-the-cuff mic antics.  Listen and be sure to keep it locked in next month for The Rub's 7 year anniversary show."

Flashing Lights was written up in The New Yorker this week! Our first press clipping, not bad.

Dance Revolution
by Sasha Frere-Jones

"Whatever you call this new moment in dance music—Rave 4.0, House 9.0—it’s a mistake to think of it as new, exactly. You can hear the pulse and the sounds of disco’s stepchildren in Kanye West’s “Flashing Lights” and Timbaland’s “The Way I Are,” and Lady Gaga’s No. 1 hit “Just Dance” is the most explicit return yet of house music. More interesting work, as usual, is happening on the margins, with producers like London’s Fake Blood, the Los Angeles duo Acid Girls, and a trio of New York d.j.s—Nick Catchdubs, DJ Ayres, and Jubilee—who hold a monthly party called Flashing Lights. Their description of the night’s aesthetic is fairly straightforward: “house + disco + techno + rave.” Recent Flashing Lights parties have been high-spirited, low-attitude events that recall the mood of New York City dance clubs from the early eighties, like Danceteria. Remember: the event is actually for dancers, rather than for people who need to text each other in public. Flashing Lights will be held on April 3rd at Studio B, in Greenpoint."

Very true, SFJ! In fact we will be joined by La Roux, all the way over from the UK:
