#TBT this week is the Adidas Originals mix we got asked us to make for their Classics series back in 2013 where we picked up our crystal ball and predicted 25 Future Classics. These are some of our favorite rap records from the last year and change, with a sprinkling of rock, dancehall and trap, mixed in a relentless Rub Radio style. Lots of goodies here that have (so far) stood the test of time. Peep the mix above and the tracklist below.

#TBT – DJ Ayres – Best Of Jay-Z Mixtape

Dj Ayres Best Of Jay Z Mixtape

One of our favorite rappers ever, Jay-Z, was born on December 4th, 1969. This now makes him now 47 years old. To honor young Hov getting ‘oh so close’ to that half century mark, we look back to a mix DJ Ayres made back in 2009 with a stack of his favorite Jay-Z tunes.

Here is what Ayres had to say back when he released this classic….

Here are a bunch of my favorite Jay-Z songs, mostly album cuts with a few freestyles and secret joints thrown in for good measure. Since Jay “retired” and came back, his music hasn’t sounded as urgent or hungry to me. He sounds like he’s coasting along, so I wanted to go back and pull out a bunch of his music that made you bob your head, marvel at his flow, puff out your chest, or even raise the little hairs on the back of your neck. The feelings you got from songs like “Where I’m From,” “D’Evils,” “1-900-Hustler” and “You Don’t Know.” Not included: #1 singles you’ve heard a million times, lazy one-take flows, lyrics about inventing the button-down shirt, songs dissing rappers who would later be signed to Jay-Z’s label, and songs produced by Eminem.

TBT this week to 2009 and The Rub’s History of Hip-Hop from that wonderful year. Uptempo party rap had become very much a thing with Pitbull, LMFAO, Kid Sister and Chelley but the South’s imprint was so strong that one-hit wonders on the pop breakthrough tip had become very common place (see Hurricane Chris, GS Boyz, New Boyz, etc). Jay-Z had his first #1 hit ever with “Empire State of Mind”. Lil’ Wayne and Young Money ruled the airwaves completely. And Drake was this new star from that camp that everyone still new better as Wheelchair Jimmy. Most everyone was just surprised any rapper from Canada could matter on the charts. Revisit this mix in full above and peep the tracklist below.
