On June 7, The Rub Movie Night is back at Alamo Drafthouse, with Menace II Society! Last month we recorded a mix inspired by our first movie, Belly, and we were all set to do it again this month but we realized we already have two mixes which are perfectly suited for the night, from DJ Eleven (posted above!) and our brother Matthew Africa (R.I.P.), which we will share next week.
About the movie:
Released 25 years ago in May of 1993, Menace II Society was the directorial debut of the Hughes Brothers (twins Allen & Albert – directors of cult classic Dead Presidents). Set in it Watts, CA, Menace tells the story of Caine (Tyrin Turner) and O-Dog’s (Larenz Tate) struggles against the racism, drugs, and violence that gripped the LA area at the time. The film stars a pre-Fresh Prince Jada Pinkett and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as an amazing roster of West Coast rappers, including MC Eiht, Too $hort, and Saafir.
After the screening, join us for more music, dancing and drinking at the House of Wax!

#TBT – The Rub – History of Hip-Hop 1997
Posted: January 11, 2018 Filed under: History of Hip-Hop, TBT | Tags: History Of Hip-Hop, TBTListen to The History of Hip Hop 1997 byBrooklyn Radio on hearthis.at
TBT today to our History of Hip-Hop Mix from 1997, arguably the best year of hip-hop ever. Some of the best ever laid down some bonafied classics in this 12 month period 20 years ago and they are peppered all over in this mix. Biggie flexed with the release of “Life After Death” right after he was lost to a senseless murder. Wu Tang returned with their second full length as fans were completely obsessed. Gang Starr dropped another classic LP. Master P solidified a full blown No Limit movement with the release of “Ghetto D”. Mase, MF Doom, The Beatnuts, Redman and more solidified their place in the scene with top shelf tunes as well. Check the mix in full below by stream or download.

#TBT – Rub Radio – Best of 2 Chainz
Posted: January 4, 2018 Filed under: Rub Radio, TBT | Tags: 2 Chainz, Rub Radio, TBTListen to Best of 2 Chainz byBrooklyn Radio on hearthis.at
#TBT this week is a look back at the Rub Radio we threw together with a mix of all our favorite 2 Chainz verses (at the time…2017 was lit with tunes from the artist formally known as Titty Boi). This mix goes from his first big hit with Playaz Circle in 2007 all the way through his solo records and collabos with DJ Mustard, Kanye, Drake and Major Lazer. This one deserves a strong revisit, especially with it being a new year and it’s cold AF outside.

#TBT The Rub – Going Back To Cali
Posted: August 31, 2017 Filed under: DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, TBT | Tags: DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, TBTRight around a decade ago, The Rub did a Summer West Coast tour and commemorated this journey with their very appropriately titled mix, Going Back to Cali. This mix showcases a wide variety of tunes with an obvious homage to a number of artists who have been instrumental in putting the West on the map and continuing that long standing tradition of excellence. The beauty of this mix to me though it never stays in one place stylistically or regionally, and the flow of sample drops in between their modern era flips is all too slick. Revisit this mix with a listen above and see if this doesn’t make you want to hit Cali for an end of summer getaway.
