For the June edition of The Rub we are very excited to be bringing in one of the most accomplished NYC Dj’s around in DJ Soul. Our man Soul is born and bred in New York City and has been in the DJ game since the early 90’s. His mixtapes are some of the most popular ever made (his J Dilla mix is one of the best things we’ve ever heard) and he’s known for being the DJ for some of the biggest names in the industry. You all have seen his work but might not have even known it. He was the DJ for the first season of The Chapelle Show and has been the in-house DJ for the New York Knicks at MSG for numerous games (dream job). Besides that, the guy is hired out for A-List gigs by big name clubs, companies, and celebrities from all over. He plays regular parties all throughout New York and is an all around good guy.

This is The Rub’s first ever release of original music, with vocals from Natalie Storm, Misun, Tatiana Owens and Bigg Base. It’s super varied, from 70 BPM deep 808 vibes all the way up to 130 BPM dancehall / bass music, some soul and some rap and some pop. Kind of like a Rub party! The EP is exclusively on iTunes this week, then it will be in full release Wednesday June 19th, both for free on The Rub website and for sale on all digital outlets.
With their self-titled EP, The Rub, the duo behind the monthly party that the Village Voice deemed NYC’s best, release four new songs that, in the spirit of the party, bring the heat across genre. Although their It’s the Motherfuckin’ Remix mixtape series received praise in outlets like Spin, Pitchfork, and MTV, The Rub EP is the group’s first release of original music.
Where opener “Feel You” places D.C. singer Misun over an electronic soul track worthy of Portishead, “Dutty Gal” (featuring Natalie Storm) increases the BPMs and lowers the bass, delivering a peak hour electro-dancehall rattler in the vein of DJ Zinc and Major Lazer. “Black & White,” meanwhile, is a radio-ready NYC rap track with hard verses from Bronx newcomer Bigg Base and a big hook from Tatiana Owens, and instrumental closer “At Night” offers uneasy late night ambience with deep bass and rolling 808s that recall the work of producers like SBTRKT and Ryan Hemsworth.
In the coming weeks expect a Fader mix (June 18), a remix EP (mid July), and more sweaty nights at The Rub, where DJs Ayres and Eleven will keep you dancing early into the morning (every last Saturday at the Bell House).

Tracklist after the jump
“Longtime FADER readers and marginally aware New Yorkers are no doubt familiar with The Rub, the legendary Brooklyn party now in its second decade. (Next one is June 29th at the Bell House.) With umpteen mixtapes under their belts, DJ Ayres and DJ Eleven released the first ever original The Rub EP this week. Buy it on iTunes, download their celebratory FADER mix and then read an interview with the pair, including DJ Ayres’ deft, preliminary analysis of Yeezus as Kanye’s becoming-a-dad album and DJ Eleven’s best breakfast recipe.”

Last night, TrapMusic.net debuted The Rub “At Night” and it’s already blowing up like you thought it would (same number same hood etc etc). This is the imaginary Michael Mann soundtrack song on our EP, all 808 and pads on some sexy bass shit. The EP will be out on iTunes next Tuesday, June 11! And look for an even vibier Michna remix of “At Night” on The Rub Remixes EP in July.
Our boys, The Freshest, from Canada are at it again as they have released a new EP titled “Call Your Name” on their own label, The Freshest Records. We’ve been long supporters of these guys, and have had them all play The Rub back in November. DJ Marvel and Kutcorners have been responsible for some of our favorite live mix series and always are a treat to party with.
“Call Your Name” channels Modern R&B, Futuristic Hip Hop and UK Bass Music with vocals provided by Anji Sami (She’s So Rad). The release has gained support from major electronic artists featuring it on bbc radio 1xtra and multiple mixes. The original version is complimented with remixes by – Falcons, Sammy Bananas, ANGO, and Deejay Theory
The Call Your Name EP dropped at all online retailers May 28, 2013, so go check it out on ITUNES, JUNO, and BEATPORT.

The good folks over at HypeTrak just premiered the first track off of Eleven & Ayres’ new EP, The Rub’s first release of original music. It hits iTunes on June 11th and all other online retailers June 18th. Lots more info soon!
This month we bring in one of the most important figures in all of music, known as the “Sound of New York,” Young Guru. This man has been the mixing wizard behind the curtain for countless hits over the past 12 years, including 10 of the past 11 Jay-Z albums, Kanye’s “College Dropout” LP, Beyonce’s “Dangerously In Love”, and Ghostface Killah’s “Fish Scale”, among numerous others. He also was the DJ for Kanye and Jay-Z’s ‘Watch The Throne’ tour. NBD!
Most recently, Young Guru was apart of a very special NYC night with the Red Bull Music Academy’s Culture Clash. He, alongside Just Blaze, brought out a rolodex of guest stars to play a jukebox worth of hits that Young Guru was the lead engineer for many of. It was amazing to realize just how important this man’s work is to modern culture.
Young Guru absolutely slays it on Twitter. Y’all should absolutely give this man a follow, as he doesn’t tweet PR fluff. The man actually gives tech advice, engineering tips, and free remixes he has produced.
Lecture: Young Guru (Madrid 2011) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo.
He is a true hip-hop head, does it for the love, and you all can catch this man live with us at The Bell House this Saturday.
