FOTR PT 2: Nick Catchdubs
Posted: May 19, 2015 Filed under: Friends of The Rub | Tags: fotr, Nick Catchdubs
So you may have noticed how we gave some much deserved dap to Nick Catchdubs back in February for FOTR when his eye-catching video for Wut’s That dropped. And because his debut artist album Smoke Machine recently dropped with the freshness, we felt it necessary to give him another FOTR nod. It’s not everyday homies drop debut full lengths and Nick definitely did his thing here. The entire project is deftly rooted in hip-hop and club music, but with a futuristic flair that always been a signature of his productions and Fool’s Gold as a label. Bangers on the front side knock quite nicely but it’s the uptempo joints towards the end feel like the real secret weapons. Peep Smoke Machine in full below and give him a follow him on these internetz.

Midwest duo and recent Friends of Friends signees, IDYLL, just dropped their first single and video from their forthcoming debut EP due June 16th and they are this week’s #TNN. Bad Boi is a haunting love stricken tune that’s been given a crazy animated visual treatment by Zero Ghul. With an overall style that updates the classic singer-songwrite approach, singer Angelina Lucero’s emotive vocals ooze with the essence of say…Lana Del Ray, while producer Jojo Yang blends a very sleek soundtrack that tastefully combines elements from 808s and classical music. Check the song and video for Bad Boi below.
#TBT DJ Ayres – Return of the Mash

#TBT this week takes us back to fall of 2010 as Ayres opened up his “dance pop” crate and cranked out this super fresh mix for Urban Outfitters. Return of the Mash is a slick representation of the electronic music experimentations that took place with pop music towards the end of the last decade which have ultimately became a huge influence on the Billboard charts of the last five years. Don’t necessarily believe me? Take a listen for yourself below and hear the early ideas from so many artists and producers that are dominating charts, playlists and festival lineups in 2015. Shouts to Mike 2600 for this killer artwork as well.

FOTR is one of our oldest friends in the dj/internet world and she’s been a boss for longer than most probably know. Jubilee gets our nod this week as she’s been instrumental in pushing the tropical bass movement pon di internetz for some time now, whether it’s been from her native Miami or as a long term resident of NY. As we celebrate this great friend, current Mixpak crew member and Flashing Lights alumni, she’s officially released her first curated compilation recently, in collaboration with Opening Cermony, called Magic City. This free 11 track comp is loaded with all sorts of Miami influenced bass music mixed with all the right levels of tropical flavors. Peep this release in full below along with a number of links to follow this great and talented individual.

We haven’t covered a full LP on #TNN yet but there’s no reason to keep this weekly post about our new music favorites in some sort of a box. Hitting just last week on Innovative Leisure is the latest LP from Nosaj Thing, who’s a relative veteran at this point in his career compared to most producers in today’s electronic beat scene resurgence. Fated puts his skill set back on full display though and the results are very buttery from start to finish. Even though a majority of the tracks are short and hover right around the two minute mark, his weirdly melodic head nod inducing soundtracks sound very at home in 2015. With his sound aging so well and that awesome feature from Chance The Rapper, this effort definitely won’t hurt his chances to stand out among the clouded flood that is the internet music world of today. Stream Fated in full below.

#FOTR this week is the dude DJ Big Jacks from Toronto. This long standing music junkie has been intensely curating his love of music since the jump with his pops. His deep crates have taken him all over the world to DJ (including several amazing sets at The Rub!), mixes featured by fashion brands like H&M, Forever21, Aritzia, etc. and he’s a Toronto radio community staple along with DJ Royale, his Grand Groove DJ partner in crime, and Bozack Morris. Big Jacks just released his OG Recipe mix a couple weeks ago and it’s quickly become a favorite for us. The OG sample game on it is INSANE and it’s blended masterfully. Stream and/or download it below.

Hailing from Quebec and self proclaimed “G House Royalty”, ANGELZ has been steady releasing some tunes on Soundcloud over the past year and the latest tune to just recently drop is our #TNN this week. “Dolla Bill” somehow is officially crediting Wu Tang Clan as a featured artist on the track, but one quick listen will show you it’s a flip of the Wu’s longtime classic “C.R.E.A.M.”. Regardless of how this feature truly got cleared and sorted, the tune itself is a definite heat rock for the clubby house set and is available now for free download in exchange for a follow on Soundcloud.
#TBT The Rub – Going Back to Cali
Posted: April 30, 2015 Filed under: DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, TBT | Tags: DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, TBT
Almost exactly a decade ago, The Rub did a Summer West Coast tour to flex their muscles (aka DJ skills) and commemorated this journey with their very appropriately titled mix, Going Back to Cali. In what’s a very timely #TBT for this week, this mix showcased a wide variety of tunes with an obvious homage to a number of artists who have been instrumental in putting the West on the map and continuing that tradition of excellence. The beauty of this mix to me though it never stays in one place stylistically or regionally, and the flow of sample drops in between their modern era flips is all too slick. Just take a listen below and see if this doesn’t make you want to hit Cali for a summer getaway.
