It’s truly great to celebrate 15 years of The Rub and looking back and everything, but new music continues to drop and we continue to look ahead to what’s next. I.e…it’s good to stay inspired and open. And TNN this week features some killer new tunes, per usual. First up is the latest from Corbin (aka Spooky Black) and it’s the first thing we’ve heard from him in some time. Easily one of the more intriguing vocal talents in music right now and “Ice Boy” does not disappoint. Next we see a new effort from PC Music boss A.G. Cook, who decided to do a note-for-note cover of Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker” after having to play at Field Day Festival at the same time as the IDM legend. Finally is TNN mainstay Amine and a super catchy track from his recently released LP featuring Nelly of all people. Stream all three in full below.
This Saturday we are celebrating The Rub 15 year anniversary. It’s remarkable to look back at the beginning of the party – Giuliani was mayor, downtown Manhattan was a mess (including nightlife), and Brooklyn only had a handful of proper clubs. In fact Southpaw was the largest club we’d ever promoted ourselves, and here we have to give a huge shoutout to Mikey Palms for having the vision to put us in there, since we wouldn’t have had the ambition to try and fill a venue that big, certainly not monthly. But the first night was super fun, and word spread fast that there was a party in Park Slope with all the music you grew up on mixed with all the new sh*t – hip-hop, yes, but also disco, eighties, house, dancehall, funk. The cover was $3, smoking was still allowed in bars, drinks were cheap, party photography wasn’t a thing yet, and MySpace didn’t exist, much less Facebook. We would print our posters at Kinko’s and staple them up around the neighborhood, but mostly we grew because people told their friends that they didn’t have to go to Manhattan to dance on the first Saturday every month. Of course back then The Rub wasn’t the only thing we had going on – we were releasing mix CDs and playing other parties – but The Rub started getting press, including a writeup in the New York Times alongside Hollertronix and Danger Mouse, and a pick for best new party in the Village Voice. That led to touring the US, Canada and overseas, and we began sharing our stage with DJs from all over the world, who we met in our travels. Then, after nearly ten years of lines around the block, Southpaw was abruptly sold, and we scrambled to find a new venue in the neighborhood, with The Bell House being really the only serious contender. All of a sudden we found ourselves in an even bigger club, a little further south but for us that just meant no more noise complaints! And though our goal was just to survive, somehow the party kept growing, each month more packed than the last.
This Saturday, we drink to you! If it wasn’t for all the people who keep coming to dance month after month, year after year, we would have given up on our dreams and gotten day jobs a long time ago. And not to beat our chests too hard, but in a time when the city’s landscape is littered with mainstream EDM clubs owned by big corporations, New York nightlife needs The Rub!

Our second FOTR this anniversary week is Max Glazer. It’s been awhile since he’s guested with The Rub but we’re very excited to have him back. He’s a terrific DJ and his unique Dancehall/Reggae vibe is something we love and feel it really compliments our “play everything” approach.
Max is part of Federation Sound with Kenny Meez and they together have become a worldwide force in reggae music. The pair have a fantastic radio show on RBMA that airs every third Wednesday of the month. Make sure to check out the most recent episode featuring Estelle and Tarrus Riley that’s embedded below. Max also just returned from touring in support of Chronixx, one of the biggest names currently in revival reggae.
Max is a longtime friend and we’re really in for a treat Saturday as dancehall and reggae have seen such a welcomed resurgence in popularity in and out of the club. This set is not to be missed!

Our first FOTR this anniversary week is DJ mOma. He’s guested with us at The Rub so many times at this point over the years now that he’s basically Rub family. He’s also no stranger to our FOTR section either. (Like here, here and here.)
In case you aren’t up on his steady stream of NY visibility and work, his Everyday People party is one of the best parties in the city and very recently got this glowing feature article in the New York Times. Along with Eli Escobar, another long-time FOTR, Mo has a years long residency at Le Bain called Dance Dance Dance and he regularly fills in for ?uestlove at his Bowl Train party at Brooklyn Bowl. Don’t sleep on these mOma + Guy tracks and edits either.
A great dude, an always inspiring party rocker, and a true music head. You can be guaranteed mOma’s going to play an amazing set for our 15th anniversary celebration this Saturday!

His debut LP is about to drop on Friday and this new one with Offset is an instant “gets stuck in your brain” type of record. Next we’ve got a brand new melancholy and melodic joint from long time under the radar producer Jim-E Stack. His new EP is dropping the first week of August. #TBT this week to The Rub’s History of Hip Hop mix from 2002, the year in which The Rub was conceived. Of course, leave the 2002 version of this series to be one of our favorites. Seriously though, 2002 was an amazing year for rap with Cam’ron’s Rocafella debut, Clipse flipping everyone on their ear with their first officially released LP, Scarface dropped a classic in The Fix and so many of the big party cuts became instant classics…all of which helped build the foundation that became The Rub then and now, 15 years later. Goapele and The Rub go back like babies and pacifiers. We’ve been friends since before “Closer” reached undeniable classic status, before we remixed “Hey Boy”, before she just dropped her 5th and newest release “Dreamseeker”, and before she broke down “Stand” from her new album for Song Exploder. Like every single one of her releases, “Dreamseeker” is beautiful, honest, and thoughtful, and her commitment to social justice hasn’t wavered. We’re bummed we missed her in NYC a couple months ago but she’s doing shows across the country this summer and fall, so keep an eye on her social media and be sure you don’t make the same mistake.

TNN this week keeps the summer hot with a trifecta of fresh new tunes for your eardrums. First up is a super interesting collaboration from Lana Del Rey featuring A$AP Rocky and Playboi Carti that sounds like a train wreck on paper but the finished product (featured on her brand new LP) is pretty dang solid. Next up is a new one from Bobby Raps’ new LP “Mark” that recently dropped. The Minnesota native continues to blur the lines and definitely has mainstream appeal…but absolutely prefers to keep it weird and underground. Lastly, we’ve got a swanky dancefloor ready remix of SZA’s “The Weekend” from Zikomo, who’s been making a habit of keeping his flips super fun and funky as of late. Stream all 3 in full below.
