Our second FOTR this week is our other special guest on Saturday, Zephyr Ann. She’s an active member in all things culture in NY (by way of Cambridge, Massachusetts) and has been active for a number of years now. Whether it’s via her DJing, working at Turntable Lab, contributing think pieces for Okayplayer or teaching youth with the Building Beats team, Zephyr is constantly sharing her voice about things she’s loves in a passionate and proactive way. She’s played rooms all over the city like House of Yes, Good Room, Our Wicked Lady, Mad Tropical and more and we’re so stoked to have her join us for the first time at The Rub for our annual Halloween jump off. Our first FOTR this week is DJ Kayper out of the UK. She’s one of the most versatile DJ’s you’ll find anywhere as she has legit turtablist level skill, BBC Radio hosting experience and over the past several years has become an accomplished producer. She’s DJ’d all over the world, performed at festivals such as Coachella and Glastonbury and very recently was a finalist for the first ever Goldie Awards put on by A-Trak and Fool’s Gold. She’ll be making her first ever appearance at The Rub this coming Saturday for our annual Halloween bash and we couldn’t be more excited to have her. Legendary UK DJ Gilles Peterson has a new interview series where he talks to big DJs about the psychology of DJing, which is kind of an untapped topic, and really interesting to us for obvious reasons. He digs in on questions like balancing partying and health, motivation, bad gigs, accessing emotions through music – really all sorts of things that go through our minds at work and after. You can hear the first five episodes on Mixcloud, and a good place to start is with The Black Madonna, who tells a remarkable story of completely dumping her DJ career and starting over from scratch.
Nick Catchdubs directed this new video for Sammy Bananas, starring his very potty-mouthed toddler! So Sammy is a great DJ and musician, you can hear him playing sax on “21,” which is already impressive, but you have to admire the dedication of someone willing to bring a life into this world simply to star in a music video. DJ Khaled and Sammy, that’s pretty much the list of DJs who have that kind of forethought and drive. If this isn’t played at Arthur’s wedding when he grows up, I’m walking out.
ALSO, Sammy has a remix out for B. Bravo “Freak It,” which we added to our TNN playlist but didn’t talk about yet – it’s dope too and you should for sure check it out.
Riton had one of our favorite songs of the summer, “Money,” and he’s back with “Deeper,” a majestic gospel-house anthem featuring MNEK. They interpolate C&C Music Factory & Arethra Franklin’s “Pride (A Deeper Love),” which is a little risky as it’s one of the top 10 or 20 house records of all time, but they do it great justice. Riton can do no wrong as far as we’re concerned, and this will probably be a massive hit in Europe going into the winter.

FOTR this week is Chromeo. These legendary Funk Lordz should be familiar to the readers out there as Dave 1 and P-Thugg have been making ridiculous fun and catchy music for well over a decade now. Their 80’s rooted sound and vibe has caught on in many ways since the heyday of blog house and has progressed to a point where it has transcended pop culture. As a testament to their catalog and history, possibly their most famous album just got a special 10 year anniversary reissue. “Fancy Footwork” has been re-released (as “Fancier Footwork”) with all the official remixes and packaged together with a number of special merch items. We quietly announced a couple of weeks ago that we’re making Spotify playlists now, so ICYMI, jump on that and give us a follow!
So, new albums by Kelela, AC Slater and Jhene Aiko!
Kelela makes pillowy R&B with excellent production, and the album is so consistent that it’s kind of hard to pick a favorite. The whole record is like a breezy nap after epic sex. Jhene Aiko’s record is not a disimilar vibe, but with a few big features, including our favorite rapper turnt singa of the last few, Swae Lee (of Rae Sremmurd). AC Slater is an old friend, but we’re completely unbiased in saying this album bangs. Outsiders has a UK house sound throughout, with a ton of great vocalists – it’s full on party music for discerning ravers. Alright, we’re off to work on our costumes for Oct 28 at The Bell House, so until next week, keep it wavey.
Watch this video below of DJ Eclipse tearing it up on Funkmaster Flex’s turntables and you might guess he has a superstar attitude to go with his massive skills, but E is truly the nicest dude in the world. We met him at Fat Beats in the 90s, the brick and mortar epicenter of underground hip-hop, where he was the manager. Despite burning the candle at both ends, co-hosting The Halftime Show and DJing for Non Phixion, Eclipse always greeted us with a smile and a pound, and 20 years later, he’s still that humble, friendly guy. You can still catch him burning up the airwaves with the best hip-hop records you’ve never heard before, on Sirius’ Hip Hop Nation (Rap is Outta Control on Monday nights), and follow him on all the socials:

DJ Stef’s sudden passing this past Sunday is a huge loss. A big homie to nearly every DJ and hip hop fan in the Bay Area, Stef was unfailingly enthusiastic, supportive, and generous. She started the influential Vinyl Exchange zine in the mid-90s championing a golden era of independent hip hop, impacting the taste of a generation of west coast DJs, and helping launch the careers of a huge number of artists. Stef was also an accomplished graphic designer with a long list of clients, including our dear friend Matthew Africa’s “Yay Game: the Best of E-40”. Always supporting live music, DJs, and her friends, we knew we’d see Stef anytime we stopped through the Bay for a gig.
Our love and support goes out to her husband Serg, her family and friends, and everyone who was touched by her, as we were. We love you, Stef, and miss you already. Give Matthew a hug for us; we’re glad you’ll both have a friend to talk music with
