Another one of our special guests this Saturday at The Rub is Kevlove. He lives over the Jersey side and has been embedded in the burgeoning nightlife and club culture that’s been developing there. Any quick glance at Kev’s socials and you see that he’s loaded up with a number of gigs every single week whether in Jersey or NY/BK. Kev’s way of playing tunes though is what’s really got us becoming fans of his djing. His M.O. is really encapsulated in this quote: “What is most important to me in DJing or any project I undertake is to genuinely have the love for it. This foundation is imperative because everything else after falls into place – people begin to see your vision, you start connecting and building relationships, and opportunity begins to present itself.” PREACH. Check out his vibe for a preview via his edition of Rub Radio he did for us back in September. Stay connected with him as well on all the socials and we’ll see you all on Saturday at The Bell House.

FOTR: DJ Getlive!
Posted: February 21, 2018 Filed under: Friends of The Rub | Tags: DJ GetLive!, fotr
One of our guests for The Rub this month is DJ GetLive! Born and raised in Queens, GetLive! has been djing since 1999 by sneaking into clubs and jumping on the decks at the tender age of 16. He’s quickly become one of our favorite DJs in the city and he’s known for his party rocking djing style that features a diverse and eclectic music selection on top of slick turntable skills that makes classic records you may have forgot about sound incredibly fresh and new again. We let him take over Rub Radio this month and he provided us with a live set from his Donuts are Forever party, an annual tribute to the one and only Dilla. He totally brought the goods on this mix. Peep this and definitely make sure you do not miss his set this Saturday at The Bell House.

#TBT – Rub Radio February 2016 – Rok One Edition
Posted: February 15, 2018 Filed under: Rub Radio | Tags: Rok One, Rub Radio#TBT this week is to our February 2016 guest edition of Rub Radio from Rok One. Because he has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things rap related and makes great mixes, we thought he’d be the perfect person to make an Anti-Valentine’s Day mix last year. If you believe in holding grudges against exes who did you wrong, lyrics explicitly airing your awkward sexual predictions (hi Kanye!), and a general hostility towards the opposite sex, you’re gonna love this one! Especially if you’re cursing the way Hallmark shoves Valetine’s Day down your throat year after year.

Calvin Harris – Nuh Ready Nuh Ready (ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR)
Last week we talked about “IUD” and this week we get it from the dude’s perspective, with PARTYNEXTDOOR singing about how isn’t ready to be a daddy. This is the perfect recipe for a meetcute with Okay Kaya!
The rollout for both the movie and the soundtrack has been crazy, and not surprisingly the TDE-helmed album lives up to the hype! They’ve got such a talented team, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but right out the gate, “Bloody Waters” with Ab-Soul, Anderson .Paak and James Blake is really doing it for us.
A-Trak & Falcons – Ride For Me (feat. Young Thug & 24hrs)
Young Thug has so many vocal styles, it’s sometimes hard to ID him on a track if you don’t know it’s him. We’re going to call this one “Mystikal’s James Brown impression.” 24hrs comes in with the Swae Lee-style sweetness to balance Thugger’s guttural shouting.
All this plus new ones from Craze, Ravyn Lenae, Detboi, BlocBoy & Drake in our TNN Q1 2018 playlist:
Busta Rhymes ft. Missy Elliot & Kelly Price – Get It
We’re old, so we still have Busta & Missy in our top ten (do millennials even have top tens anymore?). This is produced by Bangladesh and it’s really crazy. Who doesn’t want to live in a world where this goes to the top of the charts and has a bonkers futuristic video with all three dressed in cyborg costumes made out of garbage bags, doing weird spastic dances?
Odie – Little Lies / Leven Kali – Do U Wrong (ft. Syd)
Every now and then a new song hits you in just the right place emotionally, nurturing you like comfort food. “Little Lies” should do you right, especially if you are a Frank Ocean fan. And the Leven Kali record randomly autoplayed in Soundcloud after “Little Lies” and carried the vibe, so we’re throwing it in too!
Dabrye & Ghostface – Emancipated
You’d be forgiven if you’re not familiar with Dabrye, who is more of an electronic music producer – in the best sense, like Warp Records / Ninja Tune etc, not like EDM – from Michigan. His album comes out February 15 on Ghostly International, a very reliable label for cool, weird music. Ghostface has been releasing more or less same-y records, so getting to hear him over a Dilla-esque beat is a rare treat. There’s an equally great Dabrye record with MF Doom called Lil Mufuckaz.
Listen to these plus new Keys N Krates (album out now!), Rich Brian and Offset below:
“Dat New New” is a Kid Cudi song from 2008 and “That New New” is a weekly feature where we, The Rub, tell you about new music we rate.
The Migos – Walk It Talk It (ft. Drake)
Migos have a new album called Culture II which is about four hours too long but there are a good handful of diamonds in that rough, especially the songs with features. 21 Savage, Cardi B, 2 Chainz and Drake all bring an element of surprise to what is otherwise a fairly unremarkable project from the hugely influential Atlanta trio.
Okay Kaya – IUD
Here’s what you need to know: Okay Kaya is from Norway, this beat is like a slow wave syrup rolling onto a tropical beach, and the lyrics are about going to the clinic with her boyfriend to get a birth control implant. Fun story: my Swedish friend pronounces “Planned Parenthood” as “Planet Parenthood,” which sounds like an infinitely more cheerful place. Which is as good a place as any to transition to the Young Fathers.
Young Fathers – In My View
Brent Tactic sent this one over and we were not up on Young Fathers, who sound a little like TuneYards – bespoke, distorted beats and more or less traditional indie vocals. It works though!
Listen to all 3 songs plus new ones from Chromeo and The-Dream, Keys N Krates and Drake below:
