Red Bull Thre3 Style Calgary DJ Fordinho winning set from Fokus Productions on Vimeo.
Tonight at The Rub we have guest dj Fordinho, who besides being our good friend also won the Red Bull Thre3style battle for Calgary. Of course this dovetails nicely with the fact that next week at Southpaw we are spinning / hosting the first ever Brooklyn Thre3style battle.
Also appearing tonight will be DJ Pump, whose dj name betrays his penchant for playing music while wearing ladies’ high heel shoes. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
The only video I could find for Pump is this 10 year old footage one of him cutting up James Brown records. This is presumably before the whole cross-dressing thing.
Tonight, Saturday, May 1: The Rub at Southpaw with Cosmo Baker, DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, Fordinho & DJ Pumps
Next Saturday, May 8: Red Bull Thre3style competition at Southpaw with Boogie Blind, DJ Chela, Jayceeoh, Moma, Sam French, Sammy Slice, Terry Urban, & Vin Sol, hosted by Greg Nice. The Rub DJ set 1 AM – 4 AM.
4.30 – Skip-the-line Tickets

We’ve got 100 skip-the-line tickets for tomorrow night’s party and they’re going very fast. $15 (all in…no fees) jumps you right past a long wait in line, regardless of when you show up to The Bell House. Otherwise, The Rub line is always a roadblock by 11:00 pm. So if you don’t want to wait and don’t jump at this deal, you’re unfortunately stuck having to come out early to avoid the chaos. Special guest this month is DJ A.Vee. See you all tomorrow night.

We’ve been a fan of the Thre3style battles for a while now. Each DJ plays for 15 minutes, and has to spin at least 3 different genres of music. They shift the focus from super technical scratching and beat juggling battles (ITF, DMC) to a longer, more open format, party rocking competition. So when Red Bull approached The Rub to host the event at Southpaw, we jumped on it, reaching out to a bunch of different types of DJs to make it a real fun diverse night of music. Here are the DJs in alphabetical order:
Boogie Blind
Chela
Jayceeoh
Moma
Sam French
Sammy Slice
Terry Urban
Vin Sol
We’re going to start the comp at 10 PM sharp so be sure to go ahead and get to Southpaw early to catch all these awesome DJs. After the winner is announced, it turns into The Rub, as Eleven, Cosmo and I will be playing the party after the battle.
I don’t really know how else to put this… I’m a big Devin The Dude fan!
He’s the perfect combination of an exceptionally talented musician, a great MC, and a hilarious & charismatic guy. He’s been co-signed by and been on records with everyone from Scarface to Kool G Rap, The Roots to Jay-Z, Dre and Snoop to De La Soul. (And that’s only the big names! I’d be typing all day if I listed everyone that ever called him for a guest verse or some singing on a chorus.) Just before the first of the year, I sat down & started going through everything he’s ever been on to unearth all my personal favorites. While doing that, in addition to wishing I smoked weed, I got to thinking on how similar Devin was to another Dude character. Months later, the unholy combination of Devin Copeland + Jeffrey Lebowski + Joe Eleven emerged from the laboratory. And with that…

But wait! If you like the mix, make sure you cop Devin’s new album, “Suite #420” when it drops next week. On 4/20. (Ha) You can find buy links & all his tour dates at www.myspace.com/devinthedude

More Eleven news (Special Delivery & touring related)
Posted: April 8, 2010 Filed under: DJ Eleven, MP3, The RubAs Ayres mentioned a post or two back, I’m heading out on a Scion tour with Sinden, JOTS, and Frankie Chan for some middle-of-the-country shenanigans. But there’s more…
Moma & I just dropped a freeload EP of a couple remixes, featuring the talents of Janet Jackson & Aaliyah, to drum up noise for our monthly Special Delivery party, which we’re relaunching this Saturday, April 10th at Manhattan’s SubMercer (147 1/2 Mercer Street, in the Mercer Hotel). You can grab it at http://www.djeleven.com/foralimitedtimeonly/SpecialDelivery.zip
I’ll also be making stops in Palm Springs (to nerd out & be a fan at Coachella & to rock with DJ Day, Gaslamp Killer, Huggs, and J-Boogie), Cincinnati, Cleveland (with Terry Urban), and Toronto (with Big Jacks, Bozack, and Mensa) around the Scion dates. If you’ll be in any of those cities, head to www.djeleven.com for all the relevant details. Over & out.
Here is an interview with me, Cosmo & Eleven talking about The Rub and soul music and such, on Cornerstone’s Suite 903 website.
This month The Rub welcomes DJ Kayper, London dj extraordinaire and host of The Hype Show on BBC‘s Asian Network. Kayper rocks a set of old-school hip-hop and London dance music (with serious skills), and talks about her journey from teenage turntablist to eclectic club and radio DJ.
The Village Voice wrote a very flattering recommendation for The Rub: ” If hip hop is what you’re looking for, go to Southpaw for the Rub’s monthly sweat-fest. Residents Cosmo Baker, DJ Eleven, and DJ Ayres are some of the city’s finest and will keep you dancing with a masterfully mixed set of rap, funk, and probably no Lady Gaga. The line for this party can be tiresome, so get there early.” Join us, won’t you?

Our good friends and die-hard Van City representers, Matty C & Neoteric, just posted the mix I did for their White Light mix series. I’m heading up that way to rock with Neoteric on Saturday & to close out the 2010 Olympics on Sunday, with similar pomp & circumstance to how Ayres & Cosmo rang it in I’m sure. So the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Click down below to grab my mix. And make sure you explore the other mixes in the series. They are all great!
