It’s been a few weeks since we gave you a TNN and even though this is officially the first one of 2016, there are some fire records being dropped already in the new year. And so many big guns already chiming in with new music. Below we’ve got the new Kanye record and snippet that just dropped last Friday. We’ve got a unearthed Aaliyah song with Timbaland that dropped on Christmas. And finally we’ve got a big new record that dropped last week from DJ Mustard and Travis Scott that sounds nothing like you would expect. Stream all 3 below.
We’re 10 days from Christmas and you might think the flow of quality new music would slow down, but that really doesn’t appear to be happening. In years past, you’ve seen an influx of holiday themed releases like compilations, bootleg packs and even a packaged catalog of a year’s worth of releases. This year seems to be much more focused on new and original content and it’s made finding material for this column this time of year much easier than expected. This week for #TNN (That New New), we’ve got a new one from Pusha T’s forthcoming album with The-Dream on the hook and Boi-1da on the beat. There’s a crazy new collab from Chance the Rapper with Jeremih and R. Kelly features. As it’s getting closer and closer to the end of the year, many publications are dropping their best of the year lists and the Grammy nominations just came out this morning. The flood of cool new music never stops (TYBG) and we’ve got a plethora for TNN this week. The new song from M.I.A. sees her taking a strong political stance in the face of today’s current global refugee crisis. Sauce Walka and company drop one of the most classic sounding Houston Rap records we’ve heard in a minute. Tennyson drops a beautiful new EP and we share one of the gorgeous cuts on the release. Escort’s new album Animal Nature just dropped and (surprise surprise) it’s phenomenal. Here’s a link to iTunes so you can buy it immediately. Their evolution over the years has been a real treat to follow, from explorations in sweet disco to early 80s to house, all filtered through their impeccable songwriting and arrangements. Shit is just fun.
A couple of summers ago we did a party together at The Bell House, and leading up to that, a mixtape. If you missed it, there’s no better time than to revisit.
