4.18 – That New New

Coachella weekend 1 is in the books and while so many of the big nostalgia headliners are all the buzz, new music dropping from the big and small names of today is what keeps this whole ship moving. TNN this week features three more recently released tunes to tickle your eardrums. First up, James Blake snuck out a radio stream of his latest gem while announcing his new LP is done with 18 new tracks in the can. Second, we’ve got Kid Cudi who has resurfaced quickly after his last album with a bit of a return to form with Mike Will Made It on some unorthodox, but really cool production. Finally, we see Love Taps dropping the remix of their single “Falling Fast” from Durkin, which is a super breezy freestyle flavored jam that oozes Summer. Stream all three in full below.

4.11 – That New New

#TNN back at it this week with a brand new visually stunning piece and a couple releases we didn’t miss out on…but somehow forgot to let you know they dropped and stimulated our ears. First up is the brand new single from Lido that precedes his proper debut full length dropping this year. Just watch the video as his orchestral take on making tracks finally receives a proper visual rub. Second, we’ve got the tropical bass legend Munchi who came out of hiding and dropped a fire new 2-track EP on his Selegna Records. Finally, we’ve got James Nasty’s bangin contribution to the recent Classical Trax compilation released via Top Billin. Check out all 3 in full below.

4.4 – That New New

It’s been a couple weeks since we’ve put up a #TNN. But now that Spring is fully in session and there are certainly releases dropping in droves right now, all seemingly in effort to position themselves as the song of Summer 2016. While we can’t yet put that tag on something and know it to be true, we’ve got some goodies featured this week that are definitely worth the listen (and possible repeat addictive listen). Drake had a couple tunes leak last week in preparation for his upcoming studio album, the standout being the dancehall influenced “Controlla” featuring Popcaan. Snakehips dropped their latest single featuring the early nomination for breakout artist of the year in Anderson .Paak. And finally, even though it’s been out a couple weeks now, there’s the debut mixtape from Bay Area’s Kamaiyah…which is literally aces from start to finish. Peep everything in full below.

3.23 – That New New

TNN this week is a couple days late but still completely full of new audio goodies. This year has already seen no shortage of some big guns dropping tunes but the collaboration game is only becoming more interesting and cross pollinated. First cut is from Baauer’s fantastic debut full length, Aa, and it features Future and Pusha T combining for what should really be a full blown hit this summer. Next we’ve got a new freebie, Number One, from the Major Lazer vaults featuring a co-production with the homie Grandtheft as they flip Johnny Osbourne’s Buddy Bye reggae classic into some tastefully turnt future dancehall. Lastly, we’ve got a tasty recent cut from Philly’s quickly rising hip-hop/soul artist, Tunji Ige. Preview/stream all 3 in full below.

3.14 – That New New

We’ve been traveling a ton, which has given us a chance to catch up on the avalanche of new albums that came out in the last month or two. We probably don’t need to tell you about Rihanna and Future and Kendrick and Kanye, so here are a few other records which we’ve had on repeat:

Club Cheval – Discipline

Club Cheval is a French supergroup of young producers: Canblaster, Sam Tiba, Panteros666 and Myd. The first time I heard any of them was Canblaster’s remix for Style of Eye “Homeless” (2010), which is still ahead of its time, then his even more bonkers remix of Drop the Lime’s “Hot As Hell,” which has a galloping horse in place of percussion. Since then I’ve checked for everything he’s done, and by extension, all of Club Cheval’s producers. Discipline is their debut album, equal parts house and R&B, and it’s sublime. Very grown and synthy, with a ton if little electronic details that keep things fresh. Honestly the whole album is great but my favorites are “Young Rich and Radical,” “Nothing Can Stop Us Now,” “Discipline” and “From The Basement to the Roof.”

Gener8ion – G8N003 EP

Gener8ion is the alias for another Frenchman, Surkin, from the Ed Banger crew. This project is almost entirely at trap music tempo, but far from cookie-cutter – the sound is cinematic, dark and experimental. The synths on H808 sound like a video-game soundtrack which Burial might sample, while “Bolin” is a bizarro version of Lil Wayne “A Milli.” Listen to this EP while you’re scrolling through his awesomely weird retro-futurisitic Japanese Art / Sci-Fi tumblr.

Santigold – 99¢

Going by the first single, you might think Santi was going to play it safe on her new album. “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” sounds like it could be a cover of The Ronettes, and if I’m being honest, it’s just a little too cheerful for me. “Rendezvous Girl” is much more my cup of tea – somewhere in the universe of A-Ha and Duran Duran, with a writing credit from Cathy Dennis (“Touch Me (All Night Long)”). I fucking loved the chorus of Makonnen’s “Forever,” which Santi featured on, and I would bet dollars to donuts she wrote that hook. Anyhow he returned the favor, appearing on “Who Be Lovin Me,” the second single. There are a huge variety of sounds – every song is different from the last, with production from a whole bunch of producers, from Zed’s Dead to Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) to Patrik Berger (Robyn, Iconapop) to Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) and so on. If you are new to Santigold and haven’t heard her first album, “Santogold,” it’s a fucking masterpiece start to finish, so I definitely recommend starting there in order to fully contextualize the vibes on 99 Cents.

3.7 – That New New

Another week and of course, a bunch of new noteworthy music dropping in our ears and on these here internetz. TNN is back after a week away and we’ve gathered up some of the choice goodies from the past week or so. As most of you are probably aware, Kendrick Lamar dropped a surprise 8 track album Thursday night and it’s now known that it’s a companion piece to last year’s heavily lauded To Pimp A Butterfly. Below you can listen to Untitled 02 (06.23.2014). Tyler the Creator decided to jump on Freestlye 4 from Kanye’s latest and made a video acting a fool in the studio with some other familiar faces that’s well worth the watch and listen. Mavado’s latest So Bazzel dropped this past week as well and it’s a super tough new dancehall record per usual. Wrapping up this week’s collection is the latest from Main Course Records acts BOT and Sage Armstrong. Diamond Rangs is a gritty house anthem ready to rip through the summer. Check out all 4 new tunes in full below.

2.22 – That New New

It goes without saying that there have already been a number of big releases from some big names in 2016 and that list is only going to keep growing. This week for #TNN though, the last full week of February…we’re giving some shine to some lesser known new heat. First we’ve got the gawd, J Dilla, and his new single for his recently announced forthcoming posthumous album “The Diary” (due 4/15). Next we’ve got a new freebie from another Detroit native ZeelooperZ coming on some punk rock rowdy rap that’s also almost gritty warehouse techno at times. Last tune this week comes from the derevolutions that reminds you so much of The Avalanches it hurts. Peep all 3 in full below.

2.15 – That New New

TNN is back and the big guns are really starting to flex in a major way. Of course most everyone and their mom has been up on the Kanye West new album roll out in some way and after a ridiculous number of teases, The Life of Pablo is finally out in the world. His SNL performance of Ultralight Beam from this past weekend is with a show-stealing performance from Chance The Rapper is below. Earlier in the week also saw a preview of a new one from James Blake which should give you immediate chills. Wrapping up this week’s edition is a tasty new midtempo tropical joint from Love Taps. Take in some new new.

2.8 – That New New

TNN is back this week after a week off and of course there’s a bunch of interesting new tunes that have been released in that time. Huge names like Beyonce and Future are featured below with new stuff as Bey drops her first single and video in over a year. Future however dropped his second LP of 2016 already. Rounding it out is the large new single from Baauer’s forthcoming debut album. All three streaming in full.

1.25 – That New New

There was such a steady flow of great new music this week that it made picking things out for TNN a bit of struggle. Needless to say, 2016 is off to a phenomenal start with some amazing music being released along with some familiar names returning after some time away from sharing new tunes. Up first is the brand new single from AlunaGeorge featuring Popcaan that’s sure to be massive soon. Second, there’s the new haunting vibes from Different Sleep with Angelina Lucero featured on vocals. Finally, this past week saw the epic return of Munchi and his label, Selegna Records.
