FOTR: 2¢
Posted: January 10, 2017 Filed under: Friends of The Rub | Tags: 2¢, DJ Craze, fotr, Four Color Zack
The first FOTR for 2017 is the dudes DJ Craze and Four Color Zack who make up the duo 2¢. We’ve featured them here before and as solo DJs, they should really need no introduction. They’ve just dropped the 3rd edition of their mix series and it’s as tight and inspiring as the first 2. You can stream Part 3 below in full and make sure and follow them on the socials as well. Get up with these guys who you haven’t already as it looks like they will be doing a lot of dates together in the U.S. this year.

FOTR this week (and to kick off 2017) is Jon Kwest out of DC. He’s been a heavy contributor to the moombahton scene since the jump and he’s been somewhat of torchbearer when it comes to putting compilations together with a creative spin. Even with it being awhile since his last one dropped, the excitement in the last 24 hours of a new comp for the new year has officially kicked in. “Soulove” is a newly released 18 track collection for charity (put together by other Rub homies such as DJ Melo, Deejay Theory, Doc Adam, Emynd, J-Boogie and others) to support Planned Parenthood and ACLU. Make sure and peep this fresh compilation below to contribute to the cause. Links to Kwest and all his socials are included as well.

FOTR this week is the one and only DJ Spinbad. He’s our special guest this Saturday for New Year’s Eve and he’s one of the baddest djs on the planet. He’s toured all over the world and is the official DJ for world renowned comedian Russell Peters. Spinbad is also one of the most influential mixtape/open format DJ ever. Loved by the likes of DJ AM (RIP), Jazzy Jeff, A-Trak and more…he’s constantly set the standard for what DJs strive to be. His 80’s and 90’s megamix mixtapes continually get heavy burn to this day. We’re stoked to have him hold down the front room at The Bell House this Saturday from start to finish. Peep some mixtape favorites and his links below. And make sure to join us Saturday to ring in 2017.

JD at The Rub, 2006ish, by Ian Meyer.
Over the weekend, our good friend Jason Dozier passed away. JD was a fixture at The Rub; he DJed a handful of times and connected us with a lot of DJs and artists from his native Texas, many of whom we’re still close with nearly 15 years later. We’ll remember him as a big-hearted, smart, sarcastic, generous, stubborn, kind and loving friend.
“JD and I recorded the Houston for Dvmmies mixtape at the height of the Houston rap invasion (2004/2005), when the biggest songs on the radio all over the US were Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones and Chamillionaire. We looked back at the history of Houston rap (and a little Port Arthur), digging into JD’s deep crates and selecting the absolute best jams. Truth be told, he brought 90% of the music, and my role was more like a producer, putting together the mix with him in my home studio on multitrack, and recording and placing the drops (Matt Sonzala and Roxy Cottontail hosted a big Houston rap show during CMJ that year, where we got access to a bunch of the rappers for drops).”
“Although he was a succesful DJ in Texas – ask anyone who was in Houston in the 90s about Cabo Fridays – when he moved to New York, JD started working for a law firm full time, traveling all over the country as an A/V technician in court cases. So this CD wasn’t meant to take him to the next level as a DJ, or make a bunch of money, it was just a fun thing to share the music he loved. But for me, it started a ball rolling that would lead to DJing on tour with Bun B. I’m forever grateful for JD’s friendship, and for his bringing us into his world – like I remember distinctly that he told us when we were going to Austin for SXSW we had to look up his old partner DJ Mel, who became another of our closest friends. He was that dude, a connector. I miss him so much.” – Ayres

We’re the first to admit that mOma gets more shine on The Rub blog than pretty much anyone, and we offer no apology, because he consistently does dope shit. We first heard him play these Rihanna remixes (done with Guy Furious) at The Rub Halloween party, and we were sweating them even before we knew he and Guy did them. Uptempo, sort of Soca-meets-UK-Funky beats with Rihanna vocals on top, I mean what’s not to like!?! Download at Bandcamp (Name Your Price)

FOTR this week is Risk One. The Bay Area native unfortunately lost his life to cancer back in September and the DJ community has been mourning his loss ever since. He was immensely loved by his friends and peers and he was always a blast to catch behind the decks. Hollerboard alumni, Crooklyn Clan top seller and working DJ world traveler…he made people smile everywhere he would go. Tonight, many of his friends and loved ones will be gathering to celebrate his life in Dolores Park, San Francisco. We remember him today by sharing his last mix he posted and all of his links below. RIP Marques Lewis aka Risk One.
