The Freshest Live 3

The Freshest just dropped a new live video! Ain’t nobody fresher…

In related news, I’ll be spinning with Rico Uno from The Freshest this Friday at Fortune in Vancouver. And Saturday I’m at Hi-Fi Club in Calgary partying with Smalltown DJs, whose Good People EP with Grandtheft drops tomorrow!  Clique, clique, clique…

Friends of The Rub – DJ Wonder

We are so excited to share the New Year’s Eve stage tonight with none other than our pal DJ Wonder. We know a lot of DJ’s, but this guy never stops working! Whether it’s mixes, gigs, or production, Wonder is always putting out material. He plays numerous mega-clubs in NYC (1Oak, Westway, Hotel Gansevoort, SoHo House, etc) while giving all working DJ’s a good name. If you don’t live in NYC, Wonder keeps a high profile as he mixes weekly on a radio show for Sirius Radio with Sway (yes that Sway) called “Sway in the Morning.” He is also one half of the group AnimalStatuS. Dude is legit!

Go to his website. Seriously, there is enough music to get lost in. Mixes come out multiple times a week and most of them are available for downloading.

His latest mix for the Christmas show is really good, and you can download it by following this link.

Come check out DJ Wonder and the rest of The Rub at the Bellhouse tonight! Keep up with him on his TWITTER and FACEBOOK pages.

Tickets for our NYE event are SOLD OUT. We will be selling limited tickets at the door (9pm) and tickets will be available after 1am tonight for $20.

Friends of The Rub – DJ Benny B

Got some new music for y’all from a longtime friend of ours, DJ Benny B. Benny is one of the more prolific DJ’s we know for releasing mixes, but his latest one has captured our interests. We knew he has always been a huge R&B fan, but with his latest mix, he crafts together 20 House remixes of familiar R&B anthems. Seriously, press play on House of Music Vol 2 and you’ll be ready for the weekend right at track one. This mix bangs!

Benny’s one of the hardest working DJ’s in New York City. Make sure you stay up with him via TWITTER and check out his website. He also drops knowledge on the regular about ramen, chinese food, manga, bagels, daily commutes to midtown, and shitty top 40 DJ requests. He also is the self-proclaimed “best wedding DJ on the planet” so take the Pepsi challenge with him on that one.

Benny also contributed to DJ Ayres’ popular Heavy Warmup series a little while back. This is one of the best mixes of the series.

Friends of The Rub – The Freshest

This month we continue our love affair with Canada by bringing in our boys from Vancouver, The Freshest. For those that are unfamiliar with these guys, well let’s just say quite frankly they are as talented as any DJ crew we know. We can’t get enough of them! Comprised of four world-class DJ’s named Kutcorners, DJ Marvel, DJ Seko, and Rico Uno, these Vancouver Canada residents have played all over the world. Aside from that, each of these guys bring their own style and background to the table. We had DJ Marvel play The Rub this summer and he got that back bar turnt up by midnight.

For a little taste of these guys, here is the second installment of their Live Set 2.0 with Marvel and Kutcorners, with sounds all played live:

THE FRESHEST ‘LIVE SET 2.0’ FEAT. KUTCORNERS & MARVEL from The Freshest on Vimeo.

The crew also drops new mixes on the regular, all worth a listen. Just do yourself a favor and follow their soundcloud page:

We’re stoked to have ALL four of these guys play with us Saturday. It’s the place to be this weekend, so come out early and let’s stay up late!

Friends of The Rub – Scott Matelic

Indianapolis’ finest, Scott Matelic, makes his Rub debut this month and we couldn’t be happier! We’ve known about Scott for sometime thanks to his work on a really solid EP he released back in 2004 called “Primitive Pessimist”. It was such a vastly underrated EP, filled with heavy beats and beautifully melodic keys that holds up really well today. Since then, Scott has been a working DJ in Indianapolis but has now made his way to over to Brooklyn last year. We don’t like to throw praise out too easily around here, but when it comes to Scott Matelic as a DJ, let’s just say he can hold his own with the best of the best. He has a very rare ability to be able to scratch during his set as a way to heighten the mood, not draw attention to his scratching. He is a top notch party rocker who is a terrific fit for The Rub’s atmosphere.

Fans of The Rub may also recall a Baltimore Club EP of his that dropped on our pal Emynd’s record label Crossfaded Bacon back in 2009 called “Party People”.

His latest work as a producer is a collaboration with Jay McElfresh entitled “Gold Metal.” The group released an album recently called “Drop Out City” that is available to stream. Highly recommended!

Scott was also featured in a short student film shot back in 2010 that allows a nice window into his world and background in music.

Friends of The Rub – Rok One

Rok One (aka Roland Kutner) is a New York City staple. Hailing from Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan’s East Village, you can find Rok all over the NYC nightlife scene rocking parties many nights of the week on the 1’s and 2’s. We know first hand how great of a DJ Rok is cause we’ve had him play The Rub on three separate occasions! His residency at The Woods on Saturday nights in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood is a sight to see. Hipsters actually put their phones down and dance. In 2012, if that isn’t a compliment to a DJ, I don’t know what is!

Lately, Rok has taken his talents to the production game as part of a new duo called Black Russian with Mike Dextro. The guys have released 3 tracks so far, but suffice to say, Black Russian is grabbing quite a bit of attention. Their latest remix project has been for Escort and their absolute club anthem “Cameleon Chameleon.” How good is this remix? Well, good enough that a small little publication named Rolling Stone took notice and offered it as part of their Daily Download feature (Grab the remix from Rolling Stone for free HERE).

Lana Del Ray’s “National Anthem” also got the Black Russian remix treatment and was released a couple weeks ago. This is a fantastic take on a very huge song!

Rok is heavily active with Stretch Armstrong’s record label, Plant Music, and even contributed a remix to a recent release by The Glass:

Close to home for us, as part of DJ Ayres’ Heavy Warmup Series, Rok One put out a mix that is definitely one of the most popular. I’ve gotten through road trips driving through the South at night to this mix, it is just so good! Do yourself a favor and download this one and let it play.

Make sure you follow Rok on TWITTER as well as BLACK RUSSIAN. You should also click “Like” on their FACEBOOK page so you can get all the free downloads coming from them.

Honestly, what more can be said about The World Famous Beat Junkies? Every DJ, collector, or fan has been influenced by their far-reaching scope over the past 20 years. They were, quite frankly, doing things no other crew were doing in the early 90’s. A Dj collective that has reached 13 members, they’ve spent the last 20 years traveling the world showcasing routines that leave even the best of the best in awe. Let’s face it, everyone has at least one J-Rocc mixtape in their possession or library. You name it, from Babu’s juggling routines and work with Dilated Peoples, Mr Choc on Soundbombing 3, Rhettmatic’s classic tapes, Shortkut and Melo-D’s incredible skills, to the group’s top notch radio shows; the list of contributions just goes on and on. The Beat Junkies were so influential to The Rub and an entire generation of hip-hop fans.

Check out this amazing mini-documentary done on the crew by LRG. It’s a must-see with contributions from a lot of friends of ours. Everyone is a fanboy when it comes to the Beat Junkies!

So here we are in 2012 celebrating their 20th Anniversary. An amazing feat by a once in a lifetime group. We recommend all New Yorkers come out this Sunday to witness a slice of music history. They’ve always shown us love at the Do-Over and other gigs around LA and here in NYC, so it’s all of our turn to go show respect to living legends. Hope to see you all there.

Here is a sneak preview of what is to come at their 20th Anniversary show this Sunday:

Friends of The Rub – Wax Romeo

We’re big fans of Wax Romeo over here as we have known him for a few years now and had him play The Rub before. He is one of those guys that you just remember when you meet him. He is one hell of a character who parties hard and can tell you jokes that make you laugh hysterically for hours, but there is no mistaking he is one incredibly talented musician. One-third of Smalltown Romeo (along with Smalltown DJ’s Pete and Mike), Wax Romeo holds down a residency at one of our favorite clubs in the world, Calgary’s Hi-Fi Club, and is a ton of fun to DJ with.

October 16th marks the release of his first album, aptly titled Heavenz 2 Murgatroyd, on DJ Ayres & Tittsworth’s label T&A records. When I say album, I mean this is a full length 14 track LP that is as diverse as it is interesting. Many standout tracks on this one, but “Say Anything” and “No Flipping” require multiple listens.

T&A’s official press release describes the album as such: “Wax Romeo’s Heavenz 2 Murgatroyd album is both fully cohesive, with a consistent sonic fingerprint throughout, and wildly diverse. There is a Genre field below that says “please enter one,” which is a challenge even for individual songs, much less the whole album. You could apply genre tags from purple dubstep, future garage, pots-and-pans house, acid house and techno, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but so much ground is covered that trying to categorize Wax Romeo’s music might miss the point. The album is at times pretty, in other places brutal, and the sequencing is impeccable, with a very natural flow that still manages to surprise you at each turn. The bottom line for us is that for all the jokey titles, Heavenz is an emotionally moving collection of music. We hope you love it as much as we do.”

Support one of the best dudes around. Buy his album on AMAZON, iTUNES, JUNO, or BEATPORT. Make sure you follow Wax Romeo on TWITTER to truly appreciate what a mad man this guy is.

Four Color Zack – USA – Red Bull Thre3Style 2012 World Final by Red Bull Thre3style on Mixcloud

Big congratulations to our friend Four Color Zack for his victory in the World Finals of Red Bull Thre3style. You can read all about his set over at the Turntable Lab blog HERE.

Our buddy Mike the 2600 King posted video of his championship winning set in its entirety. This is just bonkers y’all!

We also did a feature on Zack not too long ago in our Friends of The Rub series. Find that HERE.

Friends of The Rub – DJ M.O.S.

We have a very special treat for you this month as we welcome NYC heavyweight DJ M.O.S. to The Rub Saturday night. This guy is the dictionary definition of a professional DJ. His residencies across the country and in NYC would make any DJ drool with envy. LIV nightclub in Miami and Avenue here in NYC just to name a few, but M.O.S. is also a staple in TV ads, corporate events, and an in-demand DJ hired out by the stars. We’ve wanted him to play our party forever and now we finally get to make this happen.

His style is as diverse as you can get, playing music from all different genres to huge crowds, something only a few DJ’s can truly get away with. His sets are engaging, upbeat, and incredibly energetic. He’s one of those rare DJ’s that has a big event feel every time he gets on stage. We can only imagine what he has in store for The Bell House, so you don’t want to miss this!

To get an idea of his style and musical palette, here is a mix he put together recently for a Hugo Boss campaign:
