ESPO
Stephen Powers aka Espo came to be one graffiti’s great heroes in the last 15 years. Originally coming to people’s attention with his in your face approach to painting city roll down gates it wasn’t long before his work was moving from the streets to the galleries.

In the pop world, Espo’s work can be seen on Kurt Vile’s latest album (one of my personal faves), Mf Doom & Jneiro Jarel’s JJ Doom album, and a little closer to home we asked Espo for our very own logo a few years back!

With his ‘Love Letter’ series going global in the early 2000s, his latest project focuses on hand painted signage that offers both nostalgic and helpful slogans, puns, and imagery that is a fine balance of tongue in cheek and street knowledge at the same time. Icy Signs has set up a store front in downtown Brooklyn, with pop ups in other cities, that showcases the latest work from Powers and co along with a retail aspect to pick up prints, books, and coffee mugs. Check out his work below and salute one of world’s finest artist!

Tatiana Owens

For those keeping up with all things The Rub, you should be familiar with DJ Ayres & Tatiana Owens’ rework of the seminal Masters At Work / Barbara Tucker anthem ‘Beautiful People’ released last December. If not, do yourself a favor and download it (it’s free) right now! And more recently she was featured on The Rub’s first single ‘Bring On The Love’ released at the end of the Summer that features killer mixes from The Rub & longtime homie Nick Catchdubs of Fool’s Gold Records.

And now as an early Christmas present, the young NY songstress recently released her new EP titled ‘Colorful’ on TC Music. The EP straddles the world of Pop, Soul, and Hip Hop giving fans of Amy Winehouse, Jessie J, and Janelle Monae something new and fresh to bump in the whip. You can purchase Colorful and other release from Ms. Owens at iTunes and in the meantime, Lite It Up!

Queen Majesty shot by Really Nathan
Queen Majesty has been one of our closest homies for a long time. Her involvement with Deadly Dragon Sound in New York’s Reggae world is unquestionable and her knowledge in the genre is untouchable.

With her long running radio show on East Village Radio recently coming to an end (RIP EVR), her focus has turned towards her amazing hot sauces and now legendary club night, Downtown Top Ranking.

We are stoked to have Queen Majesty joining us this Saturday at The Rub. She will be rocking the front room with another FOTR, DJ Marvel, from Canadia. Until then get a ginger beer, roll one up, and listen to a mix she did a few months back for The Good Life.

FOTR: Misun

misun-superstitions

We go way back with Misun: their “The Sea” EP was released on Ayres & Tittsworth’s T&A records, and The Rub collaborated with them on the awesome “Feel You”. We’re really stoked on their debut album, which just came out this week!. They cover a ton of styles, from rock to pop, R&B to western without sounding inauthentic or stagey, and the songwriting is confident and fun.

FOTR: Theo Bark

Theo Bark The Hundreds

Theo Bark (aka Wise King T, aka Bad Barks, aka the bald white guy with a beard on the left in the picture) has been a friend of The Rub since we were working with Spitkicker. In fact, Theo A&R’ed this mix that Eleven did with Spitkicker and MF Doom:

DJ Eleven & MF Doom – Next Spit 3 by Djeleven on Mixcloud

In the years since, Theo made some great music videos for Jazzy Jeff & Peedi Crack, Marco Polo & Masta Ace, and Hezekiah & Bilal. He’s also become one of the most hilarious and perceptive people writing about music.

Take the rest of the afternoon off and catch up on Theo’s observations about music festivals at The Huffington Post, Thump, and Animal New York. (His piece on attending HARD Summer sober is particularly great.) Also, you can watch him interviewing a gazillion up-and-coming artists over at Huff Post Live.

Our friends Jubilee and Dj Lindsey have been on fire as of late… well, they keep a steady flame under New York it seems and we are stoked to have them as this month’s guests for the Halloween shake down at The Rub!

Jubilee recently contributed to the long list of Fact Mag DJs with her rad mix. The mix opens up with her latest remix for Sam Tiba, cooked up with fellow Brooklyn Bass gawd Burt Fox.

Lindsey apparently got her heart broken recently while trying out to be Pharrell’s DJ, but that didn’t stop her from putting out this incredible mixtape featuring some of latest R&B that may or may not be from the future.

Catch both of them this weekend at The Rub’s Halloween extravaganza!!!

Longtime homie Dave Nada and wife Jen Lasher made love in the club…. while what you’re thinking is prolly true, I’m talking about their new mixtape ‘Love In This Jersey Club’ for Mad Decent Radio. The mix celebrates the sexier side of Jersey Club and the duo run through some of the bigger remixes from the last couple of years from Nadus, Sliink, Hoodboi, Cashmere Cat, Tameil & more. Shit is banging.

Dave also made love to himself in the club once a few years ago, ‘Love In This Bmore Club

Cassady Locke is an old friend, a dj/producer who lives in Brooklyn NY. He loves R&B, Soca, UK Garage, and M.U.S.C.L.E., and he puts weird seaweed protein in his smoothies. For his new EP on T&A Records, Locke draws inspiration from the UK. Influenced equally by classic garage producers such as Wookie and MJ Cole, and new artists like Sbtrkt with a strong nod to 90’s R&B Locke bridges the gap between Teddy Riley and Gorgon City. With a strong Jersey Club remix from our own DJ Ayres, the EP is a no-brainer, and it’s a free download!

He has had records under Cassady Locke and just Cassady going back like 15 years, including these Latin-flavored collaborations with Sabo on Bersa Discos:

Beatport has more on Sol Selectas and on Statra, a NY deep house label:

Cassady plays in very exclusive rooms all over New York City, check out his smooth ass 90s R&B mix:

FOTR: Dj Platurn

DJ Platurn has been the homie for so long that we can’t remember how many times he’s played The Rub. (Maybe 3, maybe 4?) In the time we’ve known him, he has released a gazillion mixes (check out “So This Is De La Heaven” parts 1 & 2) and a never-ending stream of edits & remixes, as well as making The 45 Sessions THE single most important 7″s party in the country. (They’ve even got Diamond D and The 45 King guesting in December!?!?)

As he always does, Platurn will be smashing the front room with hip hop, funk, soul, and a gang of surprises! Catch Platurn at The Rub this Saturday Sept 27th!

Prince Klassen – MiMS Mix # 33

Here’s my mellow Prince Klassen’s latest mix; I’ll let him tell you about it:

MIMS Guest Mix: PRINCE KLASSEN (Turntable Lab, NYC) by Music Is My Sanctuary on Mixcloud

Hey everyone,

Hope all is well. I wanted to send over the first part of my latest DJ mix series that I am very proud of. The mix is made up entirely of the works of Japanese super musician Yamashita Tatsuro and this first volume was made specially for Music Is My Sanctuary. Most are familiar with his hits ‘Merry Go Round’ or ‘Dancer’ and while I love those songs, I wanted to go a little deeper into his catalog as a solo artist and a studio artist.
That said となりのたつろ pt.1 features solo, studio, and cover work all praising the legendary Japanese musician. The mix spans from doo wop to boogie, reggae to city pop soul & a ballad for good measure. All genres Tatsuro has surely rekindled in his long and prolific career.
Please feel free to share amongst your friends and I hope you enjoy it!
