FOTR: Smalltown DJs

smalltowndjs

FOTR this week takes us up to Canada for a well deserved nod to Pete and Mike of Smalltown DJs. These two veteran djs and all-around good dudes have played all over the world and continue to crank out great tracks and mixes to this day. Their long running Hai Karate night (started in August of 1999) has featured and a who’s who of the DJ and artist community over the years and is still going strong as a Thursday weekly party. Their HiFi club, opened in 2005, is considered one of the best clubs in the entire country. These Hollerboard alumni show no signs of slowing down and it’s great to be able to call them friends. Take a listen to their latest mix, which you can stream below.

FOTR: Evil Dee

Our 2nd FOTR this week should need really no introduction. Evil Dee, 1/2 of Da Beatminerz and 1/3 of Black Moon, is a true legend in hip-hop. On top of his involvement in some of the genre’s iconic releases of the ’90s and ’00s, he’s a legendary party rocker, one of the DJs who inspired us to do this thing in the early days. He’s our very special guest DJ this Saturday for The Rub and you can get yourself psyched by checking out his recent Broadcasting Live mixtape streaming below.

FOTR: Brian Coleman

We’ve got a double dose of FOTR this week as we have a special edition of The Rub coming up this Saturday at The Bell House in Brooklyn. We’ll be celebrating author Brian Coleman and the 2014 release of his book, Check The Technique Volume 2, and he’s up first for our double shot FOTR feature. Brian has become quite the voice as a historian of hip-hop over the last decade with his 3 published books and his CTT series have become the textbooks. Critics and rap aficionados alike are blown away by his “invisible liner notes” that retrace untold stories of classic hip-hop albums.

My circle of liner notes junkies runs deep, and we spend many hours dissecting the chapters in Brian Coleman’s Check the Technique series. FINALLY someone has put in perspective the stuff I have been DYING to know about!!!! I can’t get enough. – Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson

Check the Technique Volume 2 has instantly become essential reading for anyone with even a passing interest in the genre. – VILLAGE VOICE (Chaz Kangas)

Reading these books directly inspired the CTT mixes, and we are stoked that he will be at the party Saturday and encourage everyone to give him a pound and buy a book.

Bonus: here’s Brian talking about Mantronix on NPR:

FOTR: Michna

NYC native Michna is our FOTR this week as his Thousand Thursday album dropped just last month on Ghostly International and we think it’s a great listen. His second LP for the label, he presents 10 tracks that blend so many different electronic music elements and influences together in a very cohesive way. Michna has always been a bit of chameleon when it’s come to his music which dates back to a production and djing career that started over 20 years ago. Stream his new LP below and make a purchase here if you feel like supporting.

FOTR: Cousin Cole & Phi Unit

New Yorkers Cousin Cole and Phi Unit are this week’s FOTR and our nod this week stems from their rad So Emotional remix and mix series that is now three volumes deep. So Emotional 3 dropped back on Valentine’s Day and it’s been on heavy rotation ever since. These dudes continue to put a fresh spin on pretty much everything they touch as they’ve been embracing their feelings for years now. Now if they’ll just drop that zip of all these new remixes featured on the mixtape already, then we’ll be set for spring officially.

FOTR: Nadastrom

Nadastrom

Our good friends Nadastrom released their long-awaited debut album last week and it only makes sense we salute them in this week’s Friends of The Rub. This self-titled full length from them was well worth the wait. Released on Dubsided/Friends of Friends, this 11 track LP is heavy on vibes (surprise!) and shows a great maturation of their sound that we’ve genuinely grown to love over the years. You can cop Nadastrom HERE and you can stream the whole album on their Bandcamp below.

The Bladerunners

Boston natives and one our favorite DJ duos, The Bladerunners, are this month’s welcomed guests to The Rub this Saturday night at The Bell House in Brooklyn. DJ 7L and DJ Braun Dapper recently let their killer catalog full of essential remixes loose on the Beat Junkies record pool. 7L has also just launched the redesign of his Get On Down website loaded with classic LPs and vintage music memorabilia. Saturday night, however, will see them in their comfort zone behind the decks where these dudes always seem to make magic.

FOTR: Four Color Zack

Four Color Zack

Four Color Zack’s breakout in the last few years has put him near the top of the whole DJ stratosphere. As 2012 Red Bull Thre3style World Champion and an all around great dude, he’s currently out on this year’s Thre3style circuit judging the competitions and flexing a nightly performance. You can keep up with the ongoing Thre3style schedule here.

Zack and DJ Scene just dropped a collaborative production project on Fool’s Gold featuring Mad Lion (bo!) and a song with M.O.P. called Slap it Down.

If you know anything about The Rub, you already know we go way back with Nick Catchdubs. Whether it’s his graphic design chops, his DJ sets, his Fool’s Gold crew, or his production work… Nick is that dude.  Here is the lead single, “Wuts That” featuring B.I.C., off of his upcoming Smoke Machine album, which is due to drop April 28th. The tune and the video are both a lot of fun.  You can cop the single here and get prepped for that debut full length coming soon.

FOTR: Skinny Friedman

Skinny At The Rub by Sho Shots

Skinny Friedman is a longtime homie and it was a treat to have him catch wreck last weekend at The Rub.  While he’s become a great music writer (as a steady contributor to Noisey among others) and a beast on the beats, his DJ sets never fail to be a blast!

For more, check his Chobani and Adderall 4 The Fall Classic mixtape from a couple months ago. So very tastefully turnt.
