FOTR: Scott Melker

Manhattan based producer/remixer/dj/music guru Scott Melker is our FOTR this week and if you’ve paid attention at all to remix DJ culture in the last few years, surely you’re familiar with The Melker Project. His grip on this realm has been fairly undeniable whether it’s been via his mash-ups or original productions, dude has been a part of some serious Serato weaponry over a steady diet of contributions. Over the last month though, he’s stepped into the internet radio format with his new ADHD mixshow. Already four volumes deep, the latest dropped last week featuring fellow FOTR alumni Skinny Friedman. Stream it below and don’t be shy about clicking some of his links as well.

FOTR: Sake One

Sake

Sake One is a vet from the Bay Area and, along with Eleven, a founder of the (((Local 1200))) crew. He’s blessed the turntables at The Rub more times than any other guest and is back to kick up dust with us yet again at The Bell House this Saturday, May 30th. A self-proclaimed musical servant to the people, he’s taken his incredible musical taste and ill party rocking skills all over the world and we’re incredibly stoked to have him back in our hood.  While you get yourself souped for Saturday, peep Sake’s live Outkast mix and several of his other eclectic and knocking mixes.

FOTR PT 2: Nick Catchdubs

So you may have noticed how we gave some much deserved dap to Nick Catchdubs back in February for FOTR when his eye-catching video for Wut’s That dropped. And because his debut artist album Smoke Machine recently dropped with the freshness, we felt it necessary to give him another FOTR nod. It’s not everyday homies drop debut full lengths and Nick definitely did his thing here. The entire project is deftly rooted in hip-hop and club music, but with a futuristic flair that always been a signature of his productions and Fool’s Gold as a label. Bangers on the front side knock quite nicely but it’s the uptempo joints towards the end feel like the real secret weapons. Peep Smoke Machine in full below and give him a follow him on these internetz.

FOTR: Jubilee

FOTR is one of our oldest friends in the dj/internet world and she’s been a boss for longer than most probably know. Jubilee gets our nod this week as she’s been instrumental in pushing the tropical bass movement pon di internetz for some time now, whether it’s been from her native Miami or as a long term resident of NY. As we celebrate this great friend, current Mixpak crew member and Flashing Lights alumni, she’s officially released her first curated compilation recently, in collaboration with Opening Cermony, called Magic City. This free 11 track comp is loaded with all sorts of Miami influenced bass music mixed with all the right levels of tropical flavors. Peep this release in full below along with a number of links to follow this great and talented individual.

FOTR: DJ Big Jacks

#FOTR this week is the dude DJ Big Jacks from Toronto. This long standing music junkie has been intensely curating his love of music since the jump with his pops. His deep crates have taken him all over the world to DJ (including several amazing sets at The Rub!), mixes featured by fashion brands like H&M, Forever21, Aritzia, etc. and he’s a Toronto radio community staple along with DJ Royale, his Grand Groove DJ partner in crime, and Bozack Morris. Big Jacks just released his OG Recipe mix a couple weeks ago and it’s quickly become a favorite for us. The OG sample game on it is INSANE and it’s blended masterfully. Stream and/or download it below.

San Francisco DJ and production duo Brother in Arms is our FOTR this week as spring and summer vibes are officially in full swing. If you’re not aware, BIA is made up of a couple of well accomplished DJs and producers in their own right. Deejay Theory and J Boogie have both been cranking out quality tunes and mixes for what seems like forever, but the groove they are beginning to catch as a duo has us hooked. Just take a listen to their latest remix below, which is a very classy west coast house take on an already tasty tune from Love Taps. It’s also currently available for free download for a limited time so make sure and snag that. Plenty of links to click as well and get up on these talented dudes if you aren’t already keeping tabs.

FOTR: Brent Tactic

We’re lazy old farts hustling artist-entrepreneurs and we don’t always make time to update our blog, but we have all this great music and culture we like to share – so we’ve brought in a slightly younger fart dynamic social media expert to help us. So this is a massive shout to Brent Tactic for lighting a fire on The Rub blog and keeping it burning! If you haven’t been paying attention, scroll down and check out new songs and videos we love, spotlights on our friends doing cool things, throwback mixes and much more. Incidentally, Brent is also a terrific DJ who recently moved to Brooklyn and he will be rocking with us at The Rub on Saturday! And if you can’t make it in person, do yourself a favor and listen to Brent on Soundcloud.

FOTR: DJ Knife

Boston’s own DJ Knife is our FOTR this week and is also one of the special guests and this month’s edition of The Rub at The Bell House in BK. He and his Fresh Produce crew have been doing the damn thing in Boston nightlife for quite some time now and flexing on musical diversity and versatility has been the name of his game. Just one listen to his recently released STRANGE BREW 5 will show you, dude has some deep crates and is definitely not scared of changing genres or decades. Makes you think his set this Saturday is not to be missed eh?

FOTR: Mike 2600

Back-to-back weeks here for FOTR and we’re featuring next level artist/graphic design types. This week is our upper Midwest brethren, Mike 2600 from Minneapolis. Chances are you’ve seen Mike’s solo designs or work for Burlesque of North America on a tour poster, t-shirt, vinyl artwork or even in print at some point in time over the years, and hopefully you’ve taken notice. Mike’s been one of our favorite artists for as long as we can remember and he’s easily one of the best all-around dudes to top it all. He’s also a stellar dj as well as you can hear in this set from last year. Make sure to click some links and catch up with the self proclaimed “record selector/vector inspector” below.

FOTR: Rhek

FOTR this week is Rhek and this is truly a dude who seems to do it all. After bouncing around a bit once leaving his home growing up in Nova Scotia, he settled in Vancouver in 2000 where he has thrived as an artist, designer, entrepreneur and dj/nightlife enthusiast. His art and graphic design may be the most recognizable at first glance with his numerous cover art pieces over the years for T&A and his current flyer work for The Rub. His recently closed boutique, Sharks and Hammers, had been open since 2009 and was a true cornerstone in Vancouver (and online). His contributions to nightlife are vast with his dj nights over the years such as RAP. and Heavy Gold. It’s now all about Rhek Creative, Welcome to Jankytown and Stay Wavy, which are all linked below. Peep all of those underneath some of his graphic designs to connect and follow our talented friend.
