Truly one of the country’s best secrets, Pump is one of our favorite DJs who knows exactly when to flex on the turntablism and when to rock it strictly for the party. His accolades include being a Canadian DMC and ITF battle champion and his mixtapes are always a very entertaining listen. #FOTR (Friend of The Rub) this week is our headlining guest for Friday’s The Rub at Verboten, DJ Cipha Sounds. If you don’t already know, Cipha is a true hip-hop legend in NY. Whether it’s via his serious DJ skills, his long run as a personality at Hot 97 or his various A & R work for a number of record labels (Def Jam, Rawkus, Star Trak), he’s left his mark in so many ways. As he continues to expand his brand now into stand up comedy and improv, Cipha stops through the booth at Verboten to bless us with what promises to be a DJ set to remember. Escort’s new album Animal Nature just dropped and (surprise surprise) it’s phenomenal. Here’s a link to iTunes so you can buy it immediately. Their evolution over the years has been a real treat to follow, from explorations in sweet disco to early 80s to house, all filtered through their impeccable songwriting and arrangements. Shit is just fun.
A couple of summers ago we did a party together at The Bell House, and leading up to that, a mixtape. If you missed it, there’s no better time than to revisit.

Rubble Kings – The Mixtape

In case you missed it, Rubble Kings is a recently released documentary about the war torn gang era of NY from 1968 to 1975 that was fueled by failing race relations and an overall “unfocused rage”. The movie focused on the events during this time period that broke down these walls and ultimately gave birth to hip-hop culture. Just this week saw the release of Rubble Kings – The Mixtape which effortlessly showcases the amazingly powerful music of this time period from all walks of life. Director Shan Nicholson enlisted the help of additional Rub homies Sammy Needlz, Rok One and DJ Tahleim to put this amazing project together and give this documentary a proper soundtrack.
