Friends of The Rub – Rok One

Rok One (aka Roland Kutner) is a New York City staple. Hailing from Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan’s East Village, you can find Rok all over the NYC nightlife scene rocking parties many nights of the week on the 1’s and 2’s. We know first hand how great of a DJ Rok is cause we’ve had him play The Rub on three separate occasions! His residency at The Woods on Saturday nights in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood is a sight to see. Hipsters actually put their phones down and dance. In 2012, if that isn’t a compliment to a DJ, I don’t know what is!

Lately, Rok has taken his talents to the production game as part of a new duo called Black Russian with Mike Dextro. The guys have released 3 tracks so far, but suffice to say, Black Russian is grabbing quite a bit of attention. Their latest remix project has been for Escort and their absolute club anthem “Cameleon Chameleon.” How good is this remix? Well, good enough that a small little publication named Rolling Stone took notice and offered it as part of their Daily Download feature (Grab the remix from Rolling Stone for free HERE).

Lana Del Ray’s “National Anthem” also got the Black Russian remix treatment and was released a couple weeks ago. This is a fantastic take on a very huge song!

Rok is heavily active with Stretch Armstrong’s record label, Plant Music, and even contributed a remix to a recent release by The Glass:

Close to home for us, as part of DJ Ayres’ Heavy Warmup Series, Rok One put out a mix that is definitely one of the most popular. I’ve gotten through road trips driving through the South at night to this mix, it is just so good! Do yourself a favor and download this one and let it play.

Make sure you follow Rok on TWITTER as well as BLACK RUSSIAN. You should also click “Like” on their FACEBOOK page so you can get all the free downloads coming from them.

Honestly, what more can be said about The World Famous Beat Junkies? Every DJ, collector, or fan has been influenced by their far-reaching scope over the past 20 years. They were, quite frankly, doing things no other crew were doing in the early 90’s. A Dj collective that has reached 13 members, they’ve spent the last 20 years traveling the world showcasing routines that leave even the best of the best in awe. Let’s face it, everyone has at least one J-Rocc mixtape in their possession or library. You name it, from Babu’s juggling routines and work with Dilated Peoples, Mr Choc on Soundbombing 3, Rhettmatic’s classic tapes, Shortkut and Melo-D’s incredible skills, to the group’s top notch radio shows; the list of contributions just goes on and on. The Beat Junkies were so influential to The Rub and an entire generation of hip-hop fans.

Check out this amazing mini-documentary done on the crew by LRG. It’s a must-see with contributions from a lot of friends of ours. Everyone is a fanboy when it comes to the Beat Junkies!

So here we are in 2012 celebrating their 20th Anniversary. An amazing feat by a once in a lifetime group. We recommend all New Yorkers come out this Sunday to witness a slice of music history. They’ve always shown us love at the Do-Over and other gigs around LA and here in NYC, so it’s all of our turn to go show respect to living legends. Hope to see you all there.

Here is a sneak preview of what is to come at their 20th Anniversary show this Sunday:

Friends of The Rub – Wax Romeo

We’re big fans of Wax Romeo over here as we have known him for a few years now and had him play The Rub before. He is one of those guys that you just remember when you meet him. He is one hell of a character who parties hard and can tell you jokes that make you laugh hysterically for hours, but there is no mistaking he is one incredibly talented musician. One-third of Smalltown Romeo (along with Smalltown DJ’s Pete and Mike), Wax Romeo holds down a residency at one of our favorite clubs in the world, Calgary’s Hi-Fi Club, and is a ton of fun to DJ with.

October 16th marks the release of his first album, aptly titled Heavenz 2 Murgatroyd, on DJ Ayres & Tittsworth’s label T&A records. When I say album, I mean this is a full length 14 track LP that is as diverse as it is interesting. Many standout tracks on this one, but “Say Anything” and “No Flipping” require multiple listens.

T&A’s official press release describes the album as such: “Wax Romeo’s Heavenz 2 Murgatroyd album is both fully cohesive, with a consistent sonic fingerprint throughout, and wildly diverse. There is a Genre field below that says “please enter one,” which is a challenge even for individual songs, much less the whole album. You could apply genre tags from purple dubstep, future garage, pots-and-pans house, acid house and techno, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but so much ground is covered that trying to categorize Wax Romeo’s music might miss the point. The album is at times pretty, in other places brutal, and the sequencing is impeccable, with a very natural flow that still manages to surprise you at each turn. The bottom line for us is that for all the jokey titles, Heavenz is an emotionally moving collection of music. We hope you love it as much as we do.”

Support one of the best dudes around. Buy his album on AMAZON, iTUNES, JUNO, or BEATPORT. Make sure you follow Wax Romeo on TWITTER to truly appreciate what a mad man this guy is.

Four Color Zack – USA – Red Bull Thre3Style 2012 World Final by Red Bull Thre3style on Mixcloud

Big congratulations to our friend Four Color Zack for his victory in the World Finals of Red Bull Thre3style. You can read all about his set over at the Turntable Lab blog HERE.

Our buddy Mike the 2600 King posted video of his championship winning set in its entirety. This is just bonkers y’all!

We also did a feature on Zack not too long ago in our Friends of The Rub series. Find that HERE.

Friends of The Rub – DJ M.O.S.

We have a very special treat for you this month as we welcome NYC heavyweight DJ M.O.S. to The Rub Saturday night. This guy is the dictionary definition of a professional DJ. His residencies across the country and in NYC would make any DJ drool with envy. LIV nightclub in Miami and Avenue here in NYC just to name a few, but M.O.S. is also a staple in TV ads, corporate events, and an in-demand DJ hired out by the stars. We’ve wanted him to play our party forever and now we finally get to make this happen.

His style is as diverse as you can get, playing music from all different genres to huge crowds, something only a few DJ’s can truly get away with. His sets are engaging, upbeat, and incredibly energetic. He’s one of those rare DJ’s that has a big event feel every time he gets on stage. We can only imagine what he has in store for The Bell House, so you don’t want to miss this!

To get an idea of his style and musical palette, here is a mix he put together recently for a Hugo Boss campaign:

Follow this man on TWITTER and bookmark his WEBSITE so you can catch him out on the town

Friends of The Rub – DJ Numark

DJ Numark got on my radar when he sent me 12″ promos from his label Correct Records, in 1996 when I first started DJing on college radio. I was a big fan of Mannish, Al Tariq and Black Attack, and of course Grav, who boasted the first Kanye production on wax. Of course Uncle Nu was also one of the founding members of Jurassic 5, who got tons of spins from Unified Rebelution and Jayou all the way through What’s Golden. We got to see him shred in front of a huge crowd of ravers at Shambhala about four years ago, rocking insane drum breaks, classic hip-hop and rare Brazillian cuts with impeccable scratching and finesse. And of course his signature bop! Skratch Bastid introduced us and he immediately went on our bucket list for guest DJs at The Rub, and oddly we shared the same booking agent, so we made it happen. Despite my getting lost after picking him up at the airport, and fucking up the recording when we interviewed him for Rub Radio, Numark was a total pro and his set at Southpaw was one of the highlights of our nine years there. Our crowd had no clue what to expect, and I am absolutely certain he left Brooklyn with 500 new fans.

Somehow we’ve come full circle: I just got three new colored vinyl 10″ singles from Numark in the mail, from his Broken Sunlight Series, featuring Large Professor, A-Skillz, Bumpy Knucklez, J-Live and Ernie Hines. Those drums! You can download them over at his website – DJ Ayres

Don’t miss out on his incredible “Wonder Wheel Mix” from a couple months ago, where he mixes the entire Wonder Wheel catalog together.

DJ Eleven & Mike Baker – The Provocateurs EP

New music out this week from our guy DJ Eleven as he teams up with Mike Baker the Bike Maker for The Provocateurs EP. Released on 11 inch records, this album features 11 tracks filled with tight beats and very clever rhymes. This is feel good Bay area hip hop at it’s finest. We’re proud of our dude Eleven for this one!

You can buy this release at any of the following digital retailers: iTunes, Beatport, Amazon, and Juno. If you’re an MC out there, make sure you cop the instrumentals for each track, also available.

Maybe the best part of this release is the fantastic video the fellas made for the lead single “Mike Check.” Bonus points to you if you know the films this video references!

Friends of The Rub – Four Color Zack

We’ve known Four Color Zack for quite some time now, so it’s no secret to us he is a world-class talent as a DJ and an in-demand designer. His DJ sets have always made our eyeballs pop out, but this summer has been his coming out party on the big stage. Recently, he participated and WON the Red Bull Thre3Style US National Finals against a stacked crew of DJ’s. His final routine, available below for a listen, is just incredible. His mix out of the house anthem “(I Wanna Give You) Devotion” into Young Joc’s “It’s Going Down” into “Tequila” is nothing short of remarkable. How in the world did he come up with that? He’ll be heading to Chicago at the end of the month to play for the Red Bull Thre3Style World Championship.

Four Color Zack – United States – National Final by Red Bull Thre3style on Mixcloud

Last week, he recently released a new mix for Kicks Hawaii called Weekday Warrior Part 3. It’s a great blend of old and new music that really demonstrates his versatility and tastes, not to mention his blending ability.

You can download a recent live set of his recorded during his residency at the Fortune Sound Club from August 17th HERE.

And we can’t forget about one of our personal favorites of his from a few years back. How about a 30 minute mixtape consisting of only songs by The Dream? This still gets constant rotation for us. It’s that good!

Make sure you stay up to speed on one of the best of the best by following him on Twitter

We wish him all the best at the World Finals this month in Chicago!
